Health and safety management system OHSAS 18001, ISO 45001 and SSIP

OHSAS 18001 2021年08月04日

Since there are many health and safety standards and plans available, it may be confusing to determine the most appropriate route to take. Worse, organizations feel the need to implement multiple standards or schemes, especially when customers have different requirements for their bids. This will only lead to unnecessary rework and cost.

The end of OHSAS 18001 and the beginning of ISO 45001

OHSAS 18001 is a globally recognized occupational health and safety standard. It specifies the requirements for creating a management system to control health and safety within the organization, and provides a mechanism to help the organization meet legal requirements.

In 2018, OHSAS 18001:2007 was replaced by ISO 45001:2018. This health and safety standard is consistent with the famous ISO 9001 and ISO 14001:2018, allows a more simplified integrated management system approach, and provides much-needed updates for "maintaining compliance". By September 2021, OHSAS 18001:2007 will be obsolete, and all organizations need to convert their certification to ISO 45001 or lose it.

What is SSIP?

In order to solve the problems of multiple frameworks and the attendant bureaucracy, the procurement security plan (SSIP) came into being. SSIP is an umbrella organization designed to promote cross recognition of various health and safety prequalification programs, so as to make contract bidding easier and help reduce the cost of the organization.

How does SSIP relate to OHSAS 18001 and ISO 45001?

OHSAS 18001 and ISO 45001, after being certified by UKAS accreditation body and evaluated by SSIP qualified auditors, are recognized by SSIP as meeting the certification standards, which can be used to quickly track and meet various other plans, including but not limited to Chas, SMAS, EXOR, Altius, constructionline and safemark, with greatly reduced costs.

See the SSIP satisfaction chart on the SSIP website (find the "satisfaction chart" link on the right) for many other information.

You will be pleased to know that the UK assessment authority is a member of the SSIP recognized and certified by UKAS, and can certify your organization as SSIP as an extension of your OHSAS 18001 or ISO 45001 certification.

How to obtain an SSIP certificate?

Obtaining certification is a two-stage process. View our certification process

How long does it take?

The time required to obtain certification varies from organization to organization and depends on a number of factors, including the level of development of your management system, how many resources are available to address any gaps, and the speed with which you implement them. After that, we can register you on the SSIP portal so that your potential customers can easily find your organization.
